Exxon minimized climate change internally after conceding that fossil fuels cause it

Executives at ExxonMobil continued in recent years to raise doubts internally about the dangers of climate change and the need to cut back on oil and gas use, even though the company had previously conceded publicly that burning fossil fuels contributes to global warming, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The effort to minimize concerns about climate change under former chief executive Rex Tillerson, who led Exxon from 2006 until 2016, was happening at the same time that scientists at the company were modeling troubling increases in…

Birmingham City Council, which provides services for more than one million people, filed a Section 114 notice on Tuesday, halting all spending except on essential services. The deficit arose due to difficulties paying between £650 million (around $816 million) and £760 million (around $954 million) in equal pay claims, the notice report says. The city now expects to have a deficit of…

Soviet invasions of Hungary and Czechoslovakia were wrong, Putin says

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the Soviet invasions of Hungary and Czechoslovakia were wrong. Speaking at a forum in eastern Russia, he said it is not right to do anything in foreign policy that harms the interests of other people. President Putin made the comments at the Eastern Economic Forum in the far eastern Russian city of Vladivostok on Tuesday.…

Putin’s desperate need for artillery shells is driving him into a Faustian pact with North Korea

Though it is a truism, when supplies run dry, war becomes arduous. Russia’s war with Ukraine is no exception. Without heavy artillery shells, there can be no artillery fire – what Joseph Stalin infamously termed the “God of War”. Without rockets and anti-tank missiles, Russia cannot take aim at Western-supplied tanks to Ukraine. With the pariah state having few global friends, Putin knew that Moscow did have one partner-in-crime, a state equally intent on inflicting belligerence to the West, and who would do anything for cash.  Turning towards Russia’s Cold War…
